Black Cowboys
Sabine Bungert & Stefan Dolfen
Our image of the ’Wild West‘ is still characterised by a cliché, the heroic white cowboy. Yet in reality a quarter of the cowboys were African Americans. In the past few years a community of Black Cowboys emerged, and now they are telling their story.
In 2022 and 2023 Sabine Bungert and Stefan Dolfen traveled from Maryland to California, from Arizona, through New Mexico to Texas, then to South and North Carolina, and finally Chicago. They met al lot of Black Cowboys and Cowgirls, as well as people interested in their culture.
Sabine Bungert and Stefan Dolfen have been working on joined photographic long-term projects for 15 years.
